Media Statement POTCHEFSTROOM – The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena is saddened by the deaths of a member and employment candidate whose lives were claimed by an accident that occurred at about 22:30, on Friday, 22 November 2024, on the R503 road near Rooigrond outside Mahikeng. According to information, a state motor vehicle (Toyota Quantum) was on the way to Mahikeng and a private motor vehicle (Volkswagen Polo) was travelling to the direction of Lichtenburg when they collided. Following the accident, Ompabaletse Kalamore who was subjected to employment medical tests earlier during the day in Potchefstroom, was declared dead at the scene while Constable Lucas Sekhwela died at Mahikeng Provincial Hospital. Three other occupants; a Sergeant and two employment candidates who were also subjected to medical tests, sustained serious injuries and were admitted to hospitals. The driver of a private motor vehicle was also admitted to a local hospital. A case of culpable homicide has been opened and investigations are underway. Lieutenant General Kwena conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished all those who sustained injuries, speedy recoveries.
