South Africa has invited Nigeria to host a G20-related event in Abuja, a move that may deepen collaboration between the two largest economies on the continent.
The invitation came from South Africa’s foreign minister, Ronald Lamola, during discussions with his Nigerian counterpart as preparations continue for the upcoming G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for November in Johannesburg. The G20 includes 19 countries, along with the European Union and the African Union.
While the exact event to be hosted by Nigeria has not been disclosed, it would mark the country’s most active involvement in G20 proceedings to date. Although Nigeria is not a permanent member, it has previously participated as a guest during India’s presidency in 2023 and under former through initiatives such as the G20 Compact with Africa.

However, tensions surrounding the summit are rising as former U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to boycott the event.
