Media Statement OR TAMBO – Police arrested two men for their alleged involvement in the murder of their partners in separate incidents in the OR Tambo District. It is alleged that on Monday, 30 December 2024 at about 23:00 at Nkonkweni locality in Qumbu, a 32-year-old man murdered his 24-year-old wife, following his suspicion of infidelity. A 32-year-old suspect was arrested, and is due to appear in Qumbu magistrate’s court on Thursday, 02 January 2025 to face a charge of murder. In another incident, on Tuesday, 31 December 2024 at about 04:00, it is alleged that in Mqanduli, at Mancam locality, Lower Ngqungqu A/A, a 47- year-old man was arrested for murder, after he allegedly strangled his girlfriend (40), with a belt. The information in police records indicate that the suspect was assaulted by the community prior to his arrest. He is currently in hospital, under police guard. He will appear in Mqanduli magistrate’s court soon.
OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana learnt with shock of the sad news of the of two women, whose lives perished in the hands of those who promised to love and protect them. He also passed his deepest condolences to both affected families for the tragic loss of their loved ones. These heinous acts of GBVF, especially against the vulnerable people in our societies must come to an end. As police, we will never rest until we conquer the fight against gender – based violence and femicide,” concluded Major General Modishana.
