Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The eradication of drugs which poses a serious threat to the overall safety of Western Cape communities remains a priority for the SAPS and all efforts will continue to address this plight through the arrests of those responsible for the distribution thereof. On 09 March 2025 at about 13:25 members of the Provincial Operational Command Centre performed crime prevention patrols in Brooklyn, Maitland when they received information of drugs which are being sold from a business situated in Koeberg Road, Brooklyn. The members operationalised the information and pounced on the shop where they encountered a suspicious male behind the counter. Upon noticing the members approaching, he ran to the back of the shop where he entered another room. After he exited the room on request from the members, they ensued with a search of the premises and discovered a box with plastic bags containing about 9.5 kg of methamphetamine (tik) with an estimated value of R3,34 million in an adjacent room. The 50-year-old Nigerian national was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court today, 11 March 2025. Meanwhile, yesterday, Monday, 10 March 2025 at about 14:30, members arrested a 38-year-old man for the possession of drugs. Members attached to the Cape Town Flying Squad followed up on information of possible drugs being sold at dwelling in the Sqaulo squatter camp which led the members to an address where they found the suspect in possession of 17 packets of tik and a small quantity of mandrax in his possession. The suspect was detained at Philippi SAPS for the possession of drugs and is scheduled to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court today.
