Media Statement PRETORIA – Lieutenant General HK Senthumule is the Divisional Commissioner: Detective and Forensic Services with 26 years in law enforcement which include environments such as Civilian Intelligence, NICOC, SAPS Crime Intelligence, DPCI and Hawks. Lt Gen Senthumule has many firsts in her career including being the First Female Section Head of Counter Terrorism, First Female to be the Head of Counter and Security Intelligence, the First Head of Organised Crime for SAPS and DPCI respectively. She joined SAPS in 2008 as the Head of Counter Terrorism and served in the FIFA 2010 World Cup Security Committee where she represented intelligence which was hosted successfully without any illicit activity. In January 2012, she was appointed as the Head: Labour Relations, In 2014 she was appointed as the Component Head of Leadership, Management and International Development at Division Human Resource Development, in September 2016 she was appointed as the Head: Organised Crime Investigations and on 1st of April 2021 she was appointed as the first female Divisional Commissioner of Detective and Forensic Services, where she is currently serving. As the Divisional Commissioner: Detective and Forensic Services, she is responsible for the following competencies within SAPS: Crime Investigation Service (General Detectives), Commercial Crime Investigations, Serious Violent Crime Investigations, Organised Crime Investigations, Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS), Criminal Records and Crime Scene Management, Forensic Science Laboratories and Quality Management Component. She successfully led two huge Biology (DNA) projects which saw the reduction of historic backlog from 250 000 to less than a 1000, she also led the expansion project for the Gqerherha Forensic Science Laboratory which was unveiled by His Excellency Hon President Ramaphosa. She further led an injection in capacity for all FSL laboratories in the country. She has overseen the destruction of over R1 billion worth of drugs from different provinces which are inclusive of R10 million from Vredenburg, R200 million in Durban Harbour, R65 million from Gqeberha. She also led a National Commissioner initiative of handing over vehicle’s to Local Criminal Records Centres in aid of service delivery at station level, especially to the victims of crime. Under her leadership, despite capacity constraints, the following successes were achieved: Over 70 000 convictions which include 2107 life sentences from 1435 accused persons. She’s also led Organised Crime Investigations Take Downs which led to the arrest of suspects, recovery of drugs as well as the recovery of clandestine laboratories. She was part of a team appointed by the then DNC Policing Lt Gen Masemola to lead the efforts aimed at curbing Cash In Transit Heist armed robberies. In 2013 she was appointed a Project Manager for the 1st ever IAWP conference to be held in Africa, which was hailed as the most successful IAWP in its historical existence. She was appointed as SARPCCO Chief as the Regional Coordinator for Region 21 for the International Women in Police (IAWP). In 2018 to 2021 she served on the POLMED Board where she represented the health care needs of the entire SAPS membership. REGIONAL ENGAGEMENTS As the Director for CID in South Africa, she is a member of the PCSC in SADC and is very instrumental in the development of Regional Crime Fighting and Combat of Transnational Organised Crime in the Region. She’s participated in numerous bilateral, multilateral engagements and is currently the Co-Chair of the Trilateral Planning Cell between South Africa, Mozambique and Tanzania that is focussed on countering narcotics destined for the region. Lt Gen K Senthumule is a notable speaker at several conferences on the following topics: – Becoming an effective government leader by knowing how to stay cool under pressure and tackle challenges head on, – Staying cool under pressure and tackle challenges head-on – Being a public servant leader in a male-dominated environment and using your current leadership status to create opportunities for other women – Cyber crime challenges for women.
