Media Statement DURBAN – Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested a total of 13 576 suspects and removed 346 illegal firearms from society during day to day policing and planned operations in the month of January 2025. Three thousand one hundred and ninety two (3 192) rounds of ammunition of different calibre of firearms were also recovered. Four thousand four hundred and twenty six (4 426) suspects were arrested for contact crimes, with 224 of them being arrested for murder, 241 for attempted murder and another 214 suspects were arrested for robberies such as robbery with aggravating circumstances, house and business robberies and carjacking. Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit detectives were also hard at work and for their efforts, 268 suspected rapists were arrested and 41 of those who abuse others sexually were also brought to book. On property related crimes, 479 suspects were arrested, with 294 of them facing charges of burglary at residential premises and 31 suspects nabbed for stock theft. Police visibility was maintained on our routes and as such, 465 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. One thousand eight hundred and fifty four (1 854) suspects were arrested for drugs related crimes. Alcohol remains the biggest contributor to cases of assault, especially assault with intend to cause grievous bodily harm. Two thousand one hundred and thirty eight (2 138) suspects were arrested for the crime and in efforts to prevent such crime from happening, police arrested 775 people for illegal dealing in liquor, 297 for drinking in a public place and 298 were also arrested for being drunk in a public place. Four suspects were arrested for illegal distribution of liquor. Police are encouraging community members to buy goods from registered businesses. During January operations, 22 people were arrested for dealing in goods from unregistered second-hand goods premises as well as possession of suspected stolen goods. Ends
