Media Statement KWAZULU-NATAL – More than R11 million has been raised by various stakeholders at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Charity Golf Day event. This money will go towards the educational needs of children whose parents died in the line of duty. Since its establishment in 2010, the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) Fund has assisted and paid for the educational needs of more than 1000 children. More than 50 have graduated while more than 140 have matriculated. On Friday, 24 January 2025, more than 100 golfers from corporate companies across the country participated in this fundraising event in KwaZulu-Natal. Police officers, business and corporate companies digged deep in their pockets and managed to successfully raise more than R11 million which will ensure continued support towards the educational needs of children of police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Through donations and pledges, SAPSET aims to lessen the financial burden on families of fallen police officers by funding the educational needs of their children including stationery needs. Following the 2024 matric exams, 18 SAPSET beneficiaries achieved outstanding results, earning a combined total of 17 distinctions. To date, the trust has assisted 1 718 children, with 54 graduates and 146 having successfully obtained their National Senior Certificates. R18 614 255. 59 has so far been spent on the educational needs of these children since its inception. The SAPS management, led by the Minister of Police, Mr. Senzo Mchunu, alongside the Deputy Minister of Police, Mr. Cassel Mathale, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors, donors and other stakeholders and encouraged more corporate companies to come on board to assist the SAPS with this initiative. The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, also acknowledged the dedication and sacrifices of police officers in the line of duty. SAPSET is overseen by a dedicated board of trustees responsible for raising funds and ensuring the continued education of these children. The Chairperson of the SAPSET board, Mr Vuyani Jarana expressed his gratitude and said the funds will go a long in buying uniform, stationery and for paying for schooling and tertiary education of these children. Four beneficiaries including an LLB graduate who were funded by SAPSET and a matriculant who obtained five distinctions in the 2024 matric exams were part of the days activities.
