Media Statement TSHWANE DISTRICT – On Thursday, 14 November 2024, the South African Police Service (SAPS) conducted a highly effective Operation Shanela in the Boschkop and Silverton policing precincts. Coordinated and led by Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, this operation involved a multi-stakeholder approach, resulting in the arrest of 383 individuals for various offenses. The operation primarily focused on addressing unlicensed firearms, tracking down wanted suspects, and enforcing liquor license compliance. During the initial phase, Tshwane Detectives apprehended 307 individuals for serious offenses, including 100 for gender-based violence, 44 for assault, one for attempted murder, two for armed robbery, and four for rape. Additionally, 68 undocumented individuals were detained and await legal proceedings. Should these individuals be found in violation of immigration laws, deportation procedures will be initiated. Four individuals were fined for employing undocumented immigrants. As part of this large-scale operation, SAPS personnel inspected 985 individuals and checked 540 vehicles, including 42 that underwent verification for theft status. This resulted in one vehicle being confiscated and impounded for further investigation and verification. 109 AARTO infringement notices were issued totaling R50 000 and ONE taxi was impounded for non-compliance with the Road Traffic Act. In addition, 32 premises, six second-hand goods shops and five liquor premises were searched and inspected. This resulted in the closing of three illegal alcohol premises and confiscation of 124 530 ml of alcohol, which will be destroyed upon finalization of the legal proceedings with one person being arrested for illegal gambling.
