Media Statement PRETORIA – Through its high-density operations commonly known as OPERATION SHANELA, the South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested 14 715 suspects from the period starting, Monday, 07 October ending on Sunday, 13 October 2024. Through OPERATION SHANELA, the SAPS has taken a bold and decisive approach in dealing with crime in the country through crime fighting activities such as tracking operations, roadblocks, high visibility patrols, stop and searches as well as tracing of wanted suspects. All SHANELA operations are led by the Provincial Commissioner of each province. Just this week alone, the following arrests were made: ▶️ 2 990 wanted suspects were arrested of which 84 of these suspects were wanted for rape, 30 for murder and 316 for assault GBH; ▶️ 143 suspects were arrested for murder; ▶️ 112 suspects were arrested for attempted murder; ▶️ 204 suspects were arrested for rape, KwaZulu-Natal arrested majority of these suspects with 70 arrests; ▶️ 1 615 suspects were arrested for assault GBH, 119 more arrests than the previous week; ▶️ 153 drug dealers were also arrested during this period; ▶️ 1 002 suspects were arrested for being in possession of drugs, 247 of these suspects were arrested in Gauteng; ▶️ 112 suspects were arrested for being in the illegal possession of firearms, 32 of these suspects were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal while Western Cape arrested 27; ▶️ 619 suspects were arrested for the illegal dealing in liquor, KwaZulu-Natal arrested 197 while Mpumalanga arrested 180 suspects; ▶️ 494 drivers were arrested for drunk and driving of which 149 of them were arrested in Gauteng; ▶️ 1 778 illegal foreign nationals were also arrested during this period, 768 of these arrests were made in Gauteng Under recoveries and confiscations, police registered the following successes: ▶️ 127 firearms were confiscated in the past week, 27 of these firearms were confiscated during police operations in KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape confiscated 22 while 18 were confiscated in Eastern Cape; ▶️ 2 295 rounds of ammunition were confiscated; ▶️ 83 hijacked and stolen vehicles were also recovered during this week’s operations, 25 more recoveries than the previous week Highlights of major takedowns and other successes include the following: ▶️ The National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola applauded the collaboration between SAPS Gauteng counter narcotics intelligence and the Ethiopian Federal Police following the arrest of a 29-year-old South African female drug mule with R5.4 million of cocaine in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Sunday, 12 October 2024. ▶️ In another joint operation, SAPS, ACSA staff and SARS Customs officials discovered R25 million worth of cocaine in an unaccompanied bag at a carousel at OR Tambo International Airport for a flight from São Paulo; further investigation continues. ▶️ A 43-year-old sergeant was arrested in Limpopo last week on allegations of insurance fraud. Investigations point out that the sergeant cashed out about R10 million from funeral, life and accidental policy claims. She is currently linked to six murders. ▶️ Two more suspects who were linked with the killing of seven family members at Hlokazi in Highflats a month ago were shot and fatally wounded when they attempted to kill police officers in Umlazi on Saturday, 12 October 2024. ▶️ The National Safer Festive Season campaign was launched in Gauteng on Friday, 11 October 2024. The campaign will see more boots on the ground through heightened police visibility focusing on preventing and combating crime and at the same time, countering serious and violent crime to ensure all South African, businesses and visitors to the country are safe and feel safe during the festive season and beyond. The Safer Festive Season campaign will be rolled out in all nine provinces. ▶️ The Western Cape provincial counterfeit goods task team seized counterfeit goods worth more than R2.5 million in Stikland on Sunday, 13 October 2024; seized items included sports apparel. Police will continue with their operations by asserting the authority of the state to ensure the safety and security of all South Africans and visitors to the country. Ends
