New ticketing system launched to fix Soweto Derby chaos, as overcrowding nightmare forces urgent action.
The recent Derby exposed major flaws in stadium security and ticketing. Despite FNB Stadium’s 87,000 capacity, an estimated 100,000 fans flooded the venue, creating dangerous overcrowding. Many witnessed Patrick Maswanganyi’s stunning last-minute panenka penalty securing Orlando Pirates’ victory, but the chaotic scenes off the field overshadowed the moment.
Fans breached restricted areas, security struggled to maintain order, and reports surfaced of people jumping fences. Some legitimate ticket holders were turned away, while police resorted to force outside the venue. Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA) quickly acknowledged the issues and vowed to take immediate corrective action.
New ticketing system to combat fraud
In response, SMSA CEO Bertie Grobbelaar announced a new ticketing system in partnership with OpenTickets, replacing TicketPro. This move aims to eliminate fraudulent tickets and improve stadium entry management.
“We are very excited to announce, in conjunction with the two clubs, the partnership with OpenTickets as the new ticketing agent to Stadium Management and the two venues we manage,” said Grobbelaar. “OpenTickets is a German-based company… with experience in ticketing, and we’re looking forward to a partnership where we all have proverbial skin in the game and accountability.”
Initially planned for the 2025/26 season, this new system has been fast-tracked following the February 1st derby chaos.
Security enhancements and digital ticketing expansion
Grobbelaar pinpointed two critical issues: fraudulent tickets and scanning failures at entry points. Corrupt security personnel accepting bribes to allow unauthorized entry further exacerbated the problem. To counteract this, SMSA is introducing several security enhancements:
- Immediate discontinuation of 46,000 easily replicated “till slip” tickets
- Implementation of advanced security features on ticket stock, now available at 1,700 outlets, including Shoprite, Usave, and Checkers
- Expanded digital ticketing options via WhatsApp, Zapper, Capitec App, and 1 Voucher, alongside direct sales through club and SMSA websites
- Increased security personnel at scanning points and improved cooperation between state and private security
- LED verification lights at entry points to confirm ticket validity
Cracking down on counterfeit tickets
Grobbelaar stressed the need for stronger legal action against counterfeit ticket producers and holders. Despite widespread fraud, authorities have struggled to secure convictions. SMSA is pushing for stricter enforcement and legal consequences for offenders.
With massive fixtures ahead, SMSA is determined to ensure safe, efficient stadium access. Starting March 1st, fans attending games at FNB Stadium and Orlando Stadium will experience a revamped ticketing system designed to restore order and enhance security.
This decisive action signals a new era for stadium management in South Africa, promising a safer and more organized matchday experience for all.
