The appointment of Mcebisi Jonas as South Africa’s Special Envoy to the United States has stirred controversy in the US, following renewed attention on remarks he made several years ago about former President Donald Trump.
In a speech delivered in 2020, Jonas reportedly referred to Trump using harsh terms and questioned how someone with such views could rise to lead a global superpower. These comments have resurfaced amid his new diplomatic role, raising concerns about the potential impact on relations between the two countries.
Although the role of Special Envoy differs from that of an ambassador, the political sensitivity surrounding the position has led to renewed tensions. Previous comments made by other South African representatives about American politics have also led to diplomatic fallout in the past.
Despite the backlash, the South African government has expressed confidence in Jonas, citing his decades-long political career and his experience in the business and financial sectors. He is expected to continue serving as the non-executive chairman of a major telecommunications group while taking on his new responsibilities.
There is also some concern over the company’s operations in countries that have drawn scrutiny from US officials. However, the primary focus of Jonas’ new role will be to engage with American government representatives and private sector leaders to strengthen ties and promote South Africa’s national interests.
