NORTHERN CAPE – The SAPS Management in the Northern Cape welcomes the 24 year prison sentence that was recently handed down to a 47-year-old male for statutory rape, exposing a child to pornography, using a child for pornography and grooming of a child in the Port Nolloth Magistrates Court. On 27 October 2022, the father of the victim found a video on his 13-year-old daughter’s cellphone, of her having sex with the 47-year-old neighbour and laid a formal charge with police. The perpetrator was immediately arrested in Port Nolloth and sentenced on 12 July 2024 as follows: Count 1: Statutory rape to 6 years’ imprisonment. Count 2: Exposing a child to pornography to 6 years’ imprisonment. Count 3: Grooming of a child to 6 years’ imprisonment. Count 4: Using a child for pornography to 6 years’ imprisonment. Count 2 to 4 will run concurrently, hence the accused will serve an effective 12 year prison sentence for the mentioned crimes. The accused’s name will also be entered in the National Register for Sexual Offenders, and he is declared unfit to possess a firearm. The Provincial Commissioner for the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola commended the Investigation Officer, D/Sgt Shaun Brandt of the Port Nolloth SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for his meticulous investigation that led to the incarceration of the GBVF perpetrator of this heinous crime. #If you see something, say something – Don’t look away!
