Muzz Afrika Embraces Creative Freedom and Self-Discovery in New Eight-Track Album 'OWN KING'

Johannesburg-based singer-songwriter, producer, and SAMA-winning musician Muzz Afrika—formerly known as Edgar Muzah—has officially entered a vibrant new era with the release of his highly anticipated eight-track album, OWN KING, out now via It Sounds Fresh.

Shaped by two years of profound personal growth and artistic exploration, OWN KING marks a definitive turning point for the versatile bassist and creative entrepreneur.

Having previously collaborated with South African musical powerhouses like Ami Faku, Amanda Black, and Blending Pop and African roots, the new project captures an artist reclaiming his creative independence and leaning into a broader, more accessible sonic landscape.

At the heart of the album is a powerful message of self-worth, healing, and collective success.

Rather than feeling confined by past expectations or his previous acclaimed work, Son Of A Tribe, Muzz Afrika allowed himself to follow the music organically, drawing from personal reflection, late-night conversations, and pure moments of joy.

“OWN KING is not about being above anyone,” Muzz Afrika explains. “It is about knowing who you are, owning your journey and being brave enough to become the best version of yourself. I genuinely believe this project was given to me; my job was to be humble enough to receive it.”

Leading the charge for this new chapter is the vibrant single “ENERGY,” a track Muzz describes as a “Muzz Pop” record.

Born unexpectedly during a recording session meant for an entirely different song, the track captures the raw, undeniable excitement of being drawn to someone and completely letting go of resistance.

“ENERGY represents the confidence, freedom and positivity I want people to feel through my music,” says Muzz.

“I am having fun with my music again. I want people to feel good and not think for a few minutes. Feel the energy of the song and make it personal to their own stories.”

The album structured like a narrative of self-awareness, opening with “CORONATION,” the exact moment Muzz steps forward to claim his new path. It flows seamlessly into “CELEBRATE,” an anthem urging listeners to acknowledge their progress, and “HEALER,” which highlights the comforting, therapeutic power of music.

Deeply personal reflections anchor the latter half of the project.

On “DURA,” named after the traditional granary used to store harvested crops, Muzz uses the metaphor to remind listeners of their inherent internal value. The song suggests that when your internal granary is full, you never have to settle for less out of fear or scarcity.

True to his collaborative spirit, Muzz challenges the cutthroat nature of the music industry on “THIS ONE,” an upbeat track celebrating collective progress over individual competition.

The album also dives into romantic desire on the irresistible “HUYA” before closing with the grounding, grateful notes of “LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL”—a final reminder to release pain and embrace the gift of being alive.

Ultimately, OWN KING intentional avoids dwelling on sadness, offering instead a bright, cohesive thread of hope and positivity to carry listeners through heavy times.

“I want people to feel hope,” Muzz Afrika concludes. “I want someone to hear a song and feel seen, encouraged or simply happy to be alive. Life can be heavy, but there is still so much worth celebrating. If OWN KING helps someone believe in themselves again, then the music has done its job.”
