Musa Khawula denied bail amid mounting legal troubles
Controversial blogger Musa Khawula was denied bail by the Fochville District Court on Monday, with Magistrate Bester citing the influencer’s “complete disregard for the rule of law.”
Khawula, who faces a litany of charges ranging from attempted murder to cybercrimes, was deemed a flight risk due to his track record of skipping court appearances, violating previous bail conditions, and failing to communicate with legal counsel.
The charges stem from a 2021 incident near the Mponeng Mine, where Khawula allegedly struck a man with his vehicle and fled the scene. He is also accused of reckless driving and failing to report the accident.
Further compounding his legal woes are cyber-related charges, including crimen injuria, hate speech, and contravention of the Cybercrimes Act. These arise from defamatory social media posts allegedly targeting businessman Ze Nxumalo in October 2024.
The court also noted Khawula’s pending 2022 murder case in Cape Town and a previous warrant for reckless driving as aggravating factors in the bail decision.
Khawula’s courtroom demeanor described as nonchalant, with moments such as blowing kisses to the cameras was flagged by the court as indicative of his lack of seriousness toward legal proceedings.
He remains in custody. His next court appearance is set for May 7 in Randburg, with trial proceedings in Fochville scheduled to commence on May 22.
