HARRISMITH – The National Prosecuting Authority, together with Tseki Detectives, successfully convicted two men accused of murder, robbery and possessions of a firearm and ammunition in the case of late Oupa Mthombeni who was shot and killed in front of his house in November 2021. During the preliminary investigation, it was discovered that not only the deceased vehicle was stolen. Three firearms, video camera, and Rolex wristwatch were also missing. The Tseki Detectives finally cracked the case and arrested four suspects at Carltonville, Gauteng Province, at the mining area whereby they were now working as Zamazamas. The Toyota Hilux, two firearms, a video camera, as well as the wristwatch belonging to the deceased, were recovered. The case was successfully placed on the court roll until it was referred to the Director of Public Prosecuting for decision. It was again placed on Bloemfontein High Court for trial, which was held at Harrismith Magistrate Court. During the trial, two accused were acquitted, and the other two were convicted. Velaphi Paulos Mange was found guilty of murder and robbery under aggravating circumstances and got a life sentence plus 15 years of direct imprisonment, while his accomplice, Tsietsi Arnold Moloi, got six years of direct imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
