Accused in murder of 5-year-old Ditebogo Phalane seeks bail for third time
Elia Maeko, one of the individuals accused in the murder of 5-year-old Ditebogo Junior Phalane, appeared before the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court today, April 9, 2025, for his third attempt to secure bail.
Maeko, alongside co-accused Ali Sithole and Nido Gumbi, faces charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances following the fatal shooting of Phalane on May 10, 2024, during a hijacking in Soshanguve.
The young boy was killed when his father’s vehicle was stolen.
During the hearing, Maeko argued for his release, presenting himself as a taxi driver, salon owner, and the primary breadwinner for both his immediate and extended family.
This marks Maeko’s third bail application after abandoning previous attempts, with the most recent being in September 2024.
Reports indicated that the decision was influenced by safety concerns, following threatening messages received by their families.
The case continues to capture public attention, with investigations still underway and previous court appearances highlighting the complexity and sensitivity of the matter.
