Media Statement FREE STATE – The collaboration between the South African Police Service and Private Security Companies paid off with the arrest of an employee at Kopanang Mine for conspiracy to commit crime; smuggling contraband goods for underground illegal miners. The 33-year-old male was searched and four bottles [200 ml] of whiskey were found hidden inside his rescue pack. A case docket was then opened at Vierfontein police station. The team also arrested two illegal miners, aged 26 and 31, after they resurfaced at Beatrix Mine Shaft 1 because of faction fights happening underground. A case docket for Trespassing on mine area, Illegal Mining and Contravention of Mine Health and Safety Act was opened at Theunissen Police Station. Fourteen African males were arrested for illegal mining activities in hotspot areas such as Western Holdings 5 Mine, Brand 2 Mine Shaft, Beatrix Mine Shaft 4, Merriespruit Evaporation Dam area, Molale Street and G-Hostel in Thabong. The police seized gold bearing material with a total weight of 568.33 kilograms. Gold processing equipment; phenduka (2), oxygen cylinders (5), regulators and nozzles (4), cutting torch, pick axes (3), garden spades (5), crushable pots, steel plates (5) and pliers were also confiscated. The suspects aged between 26 and 49 were immediately placed under arrest. Case dockets for Possession of suspected gold bearing material: gold processing equipment, Trespassing on mine area and Contravention of Immigration Act were opened at Virginia, Theunissen, Thabong and Welkom police stations. Suspects will appear before Court soon.
