MTN8 ticket storm: Open Tickets hits back at KZN claims
Open Tickets has broken its silence on explosive claims that KwaZulu-Natal supporters were deliberately shut out of buying tickets for the MTN8 final.
Chaos erupted last Friday when the ticketing system crashed shortly after sales opened, leaving scores of frustrated fans unable to secure seats.
The drama quickly spilled onto social media, where allegations emerged that the system had deliberately been made inaccessible in KZN to allow more supporters from outside the province to attend.
Open Tickets Chief Executive Marnus van Niekerk has strongly dismissed those claims, revealing that almost 60% of the tickets were actually bought by people in KZN.
“Yes, there is a narrative that people from KZN did not get a fair opportunity to buy the tickets,” said Van Niekerk.
“But I can absolutely say that that is not true. There is not from the sponsor or from the league or from Open Tickets any effort to in any way control who buys the tickets and who doesn’t.
“There was a queuing system that was fair to everyone. Everyone had exactly the same opportunity. And we have the statistics to back that up.
“Nearly 60% of the tickets that were sold, were to people in KZN. Gauteng is second on the list. But there is no truth to the rumour that people from KZN were not given a fair opportunity to buy tickets.”
