Media Statement NELSPRUIT – The Mpumalanga police team, tasked to curb illegal mining activities as part of Operation Vala Umgodi, are indeed working round the clock to destabilize illegal mining activities in the province. Though at face value, it may appear as if these illegal mining activities are persistent but in reality, an enormous impact has since been successfully made in disruption of these illegal activities. As an example, yesterday, Friday 24 May 2024, the astute members executed an operation at a certain farm in Schoemanskloof outside Nelspruit. However, as soon as police approached the place, a group of suspected illegal miners immediately abandoned two vehicles and ran on foot in a bid to evade arrest. One bakkie (light delivery vehicle LDV), fully loaded with suspected gold bearing materials, was seized whilst the second bakkie was found empty. No licence discs were displayed in both vehicles, though there were registration number plates on the two cars, one with KwaZulu-Natal number plates whilst the other with Limpopo number plates. Further than that, three generators, as well as an electric motor and a jack hammer, were found abandoned at the illegal mining site. All these items, including the two vehicles were confiscated for further investigation. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has reassured the public, that Operation Vala Umgodi will continue to dismantle illegal mining activities across the province and thus far, the team has produced outstanding results.
