Media Statement BRONVILLE – A 37-year-old mother of three victims, aged 11 and twins, aged nine, was sentenced to four year’s imprisonment by the Regional Court sitting in Welkom. The accused was found guilty on a charge of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). Her sentence was wholly suspended for a period of five years’ on condition the accused is not convicted of a similar offense during the period of suspension and that she has to undergo a DSD parenting program successfully. The convicted mother was also found unfit to possess a firearm. During trial, it was discovered that on 01 June 2024, the children were jumping on the bed and a fight broke out between them. The mother called all three of them and ordered them to place their hands on the ironing board and burned them with an iron. After burning them, she sent them to bed. The following day, one of the twins was crying and making a noise, so her mother called her and again told her to place her hand on the ironing board, where after she burned the child with the hot iron again. It was further stated that thereafter, she gave all the children food and sent them to bed. The following day at school, the teacher noticed the burn wounds and enquired from the one sibling what happened, and he told her that all three siblings were burned by their mother and the reason behind the punishment. The teacher reported the matter to the police. The investigation led by Detective Warrant Officer DR Seale working together with State prosecutor, ME E. Van Niekerk, who made sure that the Regional Court Magistrate ME Lefenja sentenced the mother for vicious assault of her children.
