More Than R400,000 Raised for Hawks Veteran After Stolen Coffee Machine Saga Sparks National Outrage

Karl Sander

A fundraising campaign launched to replace a stolen coffee machine belonging to a veteran Hawks detective has exploded into a nationwide show of support, with South Africans donating more than R400,000 in a matter of days.

What began as a modest effort to raise R5,000 for Warrant Officer Karl Sander has become one of the most remarkable displays of public solidarity in recent memory, transforming a deeply personal workplace ordeal into a national conversation about dignity, justice and the treatment of dedicated public servants.

The overwhelming response followed Sander’s emotional testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Monday, where he recounted the events surrounding the theft of his personal coffee machine and the humiliation he says followed.

Emotional Testimony Strikes a National Chord

Sander, a veteran narcotics investigator who has served the South African Police Service (SAPS) for more than four decades, told the commission that the coffee machine represented far more than a workplace appliance.

During long and often dangerous investigations into organised crime and drug trafficking networks, the machine had become what he described as his “only safe space” amid the pressures of the job.

His testimony revealed that after the coffee machine disappeared during an internal investigation, he was allegedly subjected to a polygraph test and scrutiny over the theft of his own property.

The revelations left many South Africans stunned and sparked a wave of sympathy across social media and online platforms.

Fundraiser Surpasses Expectations

The crowdfunding campaign was launched on BackaBuddy by supporter Kyle van Reenen, with an initial target of just R5,000 to replace the stolen machine.

Instead, donations poured in from across the country.

Within 24 hours, the campaign had already exceeded R140,000. Support continued to grow rapidly, eventually pushing the total beyond R400,000.

The extraordinary response reflected the public’s admiration for Sander’s years of service and the emotional impact of his testimony.

For many donors, the fundraiser was about far more than purchasing a replacement coffee machine.

Cleared of Wrongdoing

During his appearance before the commission, Sander also confirmed that a disputed polygraph test used during an internal inquiry into a major cocaine theft in 2021 had been found to be invalid.

The commission subsequently cleared him of any involvement in the matter.

That finding added another layer to a story that many South Africans viewed as an example of an employee being subjected to unnecessary humiliation despite a long and distinguished career in law enforcement.

More Than a Coffee Machine

Organisers have indicated that only a fraction of the donated funds will be needed to purchase a high-quality replacement coffee machine for Sander.

The remaining money is expected to be directed towards K-9 training programmes and other initiatives that support policing and crime-fighting efforts.

Yet the significance of the campaign extends well beyond the money raised.

For many South Africans, Sander’s story resonated because it reflected a broader reality experienced in workplaces across the country, where small acts, policies or disciplinary processes can sometimes leave lasting emotional scars.

His description of the coffee machine as a personal refuge during demanding shifts struck a powerful emotional chord. What might appear to be an ordinary appliance became a symbol of comfort, stability and humanity in an environment often defined by stress and pressure.

As donations continue to flow in, the campaign has evolved into something much larger than its original purpose. It has become a public statement of appreciation for a veteran detective, and a reminder that even the smallest personal losses can reveal much larger truths about dignity, respect and the human cost of institutional conflict.
