WESTERN CAPE – Moorreesburg SAPS is hard at work to rid their community from illegal firearms and ammunition. Their efforts were rewarded when they seized a safe with different calibre firearms and ammunition and apprehended a number of suspect in connection with the discovery. On Tuesday, 20 August 2024, members attached to Moorreesburg SAPS followed up on information received about firearms which were circulated in their precinct. The information were verified and led the members to a residence in Sonneblom, Rosenhof, Moorreesburg where they accosted two occupants in the act of tempering with a firearm safe . The two males attempted to flee but the element of surprise overwhelmed them as the members apprehended them instantaneously. The members conducted a search of the premises upon which they found and seized the safe and a .38 Special revolver and several rounds of ammunition. It was clear to the members that there might have been more firearms, possibly in circulation as the bottom part of the safe was already removed. The members also found an identity document which expanded their investigation to a residence situated in Meule Street where they discovered that the residence had been burgled. Through enquiries conducted in the area, the members established that the owner depicted on the identity document had recently passed on. However, family members of the deceased assisted the members and identified and verified some of the stolen items. Some of the stolen property were directly linked to a burglary of electric equipment on 20 August 2024. Investigation reveals that two males, 17 and 32 who were apprehended when stolen property from the same residence, was found in their possession Extended investigation into possible firearms in circulation took the integrated team consisting SAPS and Law Enforcement members to an address in Klipbok Street where they found and seized a .22 rifle. The same team was led to another address in Sonneblom Street where the members ensued with a search and discovered a second .22 rifle. Further investigation took the team to Renoster Street where they discovered a cache of ammunition which led to the arrest of a 15-year-old male. Extended investigation into CCTV footage led to the arrest three more suspects, aged 14, 17 and 18. The eight suspects face an array of charges, ranging from housebreaking and theft, Possession of presumed stolen property to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. They are scheduled to appear in the Morreeesburg Magistrates’ court today, Thursday, 22 August 2024.
