The funeral of slain South African Police Service officer Louis Nel was held on Friday morning, where emotional tributes were paid to the fallen officer who died in the line of duty.
Captain Nel was gunned down in a hail of bullets during an ambush in Mount Edgecombe on 30 April 2026 while carrying out official duties alongside a colleague who remains in hospital fighting for his life.
Delivering the eulogy on behalf of SAPS, police leadership described Nel’s death as a painful loss not only to his family, but to the entire nation.
Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi assured mourners that police are determined to track down those responsible for the deadly attack.
“What I can assure the family and friends of Captain Nel is that we will find his killers and, pretty soon, dead or alive,” said Mkhwanazi during the funeral service.
The killing of Captain Nel has once again raised serious concerns over the increasing attacks targeting law enforcement officers across South Africa.
Police investigations into the ambush are continuing.
