Media Statement The Minister of Police, Mr Senzo Mchunu, commends the South African Police Service (SAPS) and all partner agencies for their dedication and commitment in dismantling a sophisticated drug syndicate operating online. Following an extensive investigation initiated by the National Head Office Narcotics Unit in April 2022, an operation was executed today which led to the arrest of six suspects, three males and three females, aged between 27 and 54, at various locations in Pretoria. The syndicate was involved in the illegal sale of steroids, scheduled medicines, stimulants, and other performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). The SAPS National Organised Crime Investigations (OCI) Narcotics Unit, in collaboration with the Gauteng Provincial Narcotics Unit, Crime Intelligence, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport, and the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), executed search and seizure warrants at targeted premises. This resulted in the confiscation of a significant quantity of illicit substances and contraband linked to the suspects. The arrested individuals face multiple charges under the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act, the Medicines and Related Substances Act, and the Counterfeit Goods Act, as well as money laundering and will appear in court later this week as investigations continue. Minister Mchunu commended the SAPS and its partners for their relentless pursuit of those who seek to exploit the online space for criminal activity. “This operation sends a clear message that law enforcement agencies in South Africa will not tolerate the illegal distribution of dangerous substances. The sale of illicit drugs and counterfeit medicines poses a serious threat to public health and safety. We remain steadfast in our commitment to dismantling such criminal networks,” said the Minister. Ends For enquiries, contact Ms Kamogelo Mogotsi, Spokesperson for the Ministry on 076 523 0085.
