POLOKWANE – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo proudly acknowledges the vital contribution of the Facial Identification Section in solving complex criminal cases. One of the members at the forefront of this specialised unit is Warrant Officer Nicholas Makanyoge Marobane, (39), whose exceptional artistic talent and forensic expertise are instrumental in delivering justice and offering closure to victims. The Facial Identification Section plays a crucial role in criminal investigations by: Creating Visual Likenesses: Producing images of suspects based on witness descriptions. Artistic Rendering: Developing sketches of suspects, missing persons, and other critical evidence. Age Progression: Depicting how a person’s appearance may have changed over time. Morphological Analysis: Analysing facial structures to verify identities. Comparative Analysis: Examining and comparing images from photographs and video footage. Warrant Officer Marobane joined SAPS in 2015 as an administrative clerk at the Lydenburg SAPS’ MIC office in Mpumalanga province. In 2018, he was appointed as a Warrant Officer in the Facial Identification Section at the Polokwane Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC). Armed with a B-Tech in Fine Arts (2011) and a National Diploma in Fine and Applied Arts (2010) from Tshwane University of Technology, Warrant Officer Marobane has further refined his expertise through specialized training in advanced facial identification software, including EFIT, EFIT6, and 3D EFIT. Driven by a profound sense of purpose, Warrant Officer Marobane finds inspiration in using his God-given artistic talent to bring criminals to justice. “I am motivated by the unwavering support of my family, who have always encouraged my passion for art and my mission to serve communities. My goal is to ensure that even the most elusive perpetrators—especially those who target vulnerable children—are identified and held accountable,” he says. In his capacity as a Forensic Analyst, Warrant Officer Marobane meticulously crafts facial composites and sketches, manages critical case dockets, and provides essential visual evidence that aids in suspect identification and apprehension. His precision and commitment have contributed to several breakthroughs in high-profile cases. The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, along with the SAPS management team, commends Warrant Officer Marobane for his dedication and invaluable service. His work not only strengthens SAPS’ investigative capabilities but also reinforces the organization’s commitment to ensuring criminals face justice while victims receive the dignity and support they deserve. As the country approaches the Easter holidays, the work of the Facial Identification Section becomes even more crucial. With an expected increase in travel volumes and the potential for criminal activities targeting vulnerable citizens, advanced forensic techniques and skilled professionals like Warrant Officer Marobane are key in ensuring public safety. The SAPS remains steadfast in leveraging advanced forensic techniques and the expertise of professionals like Warrant Officer Marobane to combat crime and protect communities. Ends
