Key issues discussed included the poor condition of roads in the Lake View area, the need for pothole repairs and road rehabilitation, maintenance of old bridges, and job creation within the local community. Concerns were also raised regarding the lack of scholar patrols and the shortage of speed humps around Koot Nieman School, which have contributed to frequent accidents. In addition, the damaging impact of overloaded trucks on road infrastructure was highlighted.
MEC Mbalula emphasised that improving road safety requires cooperation between the department and the community. He urged motorists, especially truck operators, to comply with traffic laws, stressing that enforcement must be strengthened. He noted that issues such as scholar patrols and the installation of speed humps to improve pedestrian safety would be prioritised. “Understanding the needs of the community and working together to address them is essential,” MEC concluded.
The Central University of Technology in the Free State, which is undertaking the Pothole Eradication Programme in the Lake View area, also presented a progress report.
