Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane hosted the final School Safety Imbizo in Sedibeng, focusing on critical security challenges affecting schools. The discussion highlighted escalating issues such as armed gangs, violence linked to initiation schools, and the growing threat of burglaries and vandalism, which continue to strip schools of vital resources.
Another major concern raised was cable theft, which has left many classrooms without electricity, severely impacting learning conditions. Additionally, the presence of weapons, increased incidents of bullying, and learner muggings were flagged as serious risks to student safety.
Chiloane assured attendees that the department would incorporate community concerns into its safety strategies. He emphasized the urgency of the matter and committed to immediate interventions to protect learners and restore a secure learning environment.
