JOHANNESBURG — Dr Snuki Zikalala of the ANC Veteran’s League paid heartfelt tribute to Gertrude Shope, describing her as a woman of unshakable principles who had no tolerance for corruption.
“MaShope didn’t just talk about integrity — she lived it,” said Zikalala. “She was strict, disciplined, and held firm to her values, no matter the pressure.”
Shope, affectionately known as MaShope, is being honoured with a Special Official Funeral Category 1 in recognition of her lifelong dedication to justice and equality.
Her legacy stretches far beyond politics. A stalwart of the anti-apartheid struggle, Shope operated in underground structures, endured years in exile, and later became a respected member of South Africa’s democratic Parliament.
She also blazed a trail for women, leading the ANC Women’s League and its Women’s Section in exile, helping to shape the party’s stance on gender equality and inspire future generations.
As the country mourns her passing, many are remembering not just her role in history, but the quiet, powerful example she set in leadership — one rooted in ethics, humility, and unwavering dedication to the cause.
