Allende admits losing the league hurt, but it reignited Sundowns
Marcelo Allende says last season’s Betway Premiership title loss still stings — and that pain is now fuel for Mamelodi Sundowns.
Orlando Pirates ended the Brazilians’ eight-year stranglehold on the league title, lifting the trophy for the first time since 2012.
Sundowns were more focused on their continental ambitions, and won the CAF Champions League.
“It was painful to lose the league but I think that has helped us a little bit to get the hunger so we can get back our trophy,” Allende told Sundowns TV.
The Chilean midfielder says Chloorkop’s target this season is clear, to dominate South Africa again after a campaign that fell short locally.
“We put it on target this year that we have to play and win the local competitions in South Africa,” he added. “Last year we struggled a little bit in that path. But what I said to you we put it on target to play finals and win.
“We already have MTN8 final, Super Cup, Intercontinental, the league is also important for us, of course the Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup.”
With Africa conquered, Sundowns now want the league back, and also the other trophies.
