Media Statement KWAZULU-NATAL – On Wednesday 24 April 2024, Newcastle Regional Court convicted and sentenced Mbongiseni Kubheka (43) to five years’ direct imprisonment for perjury and extortion. In February last year, Kubheka’s employer received a call from the family informing him that his worker Mr Kubheka was not at work and his whereabouts were unknown. They proceeded to the police station to report a missing person, whilst in the police station the employer received a call from unknown suspect demanding a ransom of R30 000.00 in order to release Kubheka. A bank account number was provided to the employer and a case of kidnapping was then reported at Charlestown police station. The case docket was allocated to the Hawks members from Newcastle Serious Organised Crime Investigation. A detailed investigation was conducted and a week later Kubheka came back home. He claimed that he was held against his will by unknown suspects. Hawks members pursued their investigation until they established that Kubheka was lying. A case of perjury as well as extortion was then registered. Kubheka was charged accordingly and appeared in court several times until he was found guilty on Wednesday, 24 April 2024. The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona welcomed the sentence of the accused and commended the members for the good work. “This sentence serves as lesson to those who are reporting false cases and abuse state resources unnecessarily,” he said.
