KESTELL – The Free State High Court in Harrismith has sentenced Bonginkosi Mokoena (25) from the Phahameng Section, Tlholong near Kestell to 20 years direct imprisonment for the murder of two-year-old Bophelo Moballane. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and unfit to work with children under the Children’s Act. On 6 June 2024, personnel at a local clinic were shocked upon examining the lifeless body of Bophelo Moballane, who was brought in by his mother, her boyfriend (the accused), and a family member after they realised he was not breathing. Investigations revealed that on 5 June 2024, the accused brutally assaulted the toddler after the child soiled himself. The child was whipped with a stick, kicked with booted feet, and placed inside a basin filled with cold water. The accused and his girlfriend then went to sleep without checking on the child’s condition. The following day, 6 June 2024, after noticing that the toddler was not breathing, they took him to the local clinic. Upon arrival, the police and emergency services were called, and the child was declared dead. The accused was arrested on the same day.
