Media Statement TROMPSBURG – Free State men and women in blue welcomes the successful prosecution of Neo Ramatheko following an incident of infrastructure theft at the Trompsburg power station. The case, investigated by Constable Philiswa Tshangana, involved the theft of fibre optic cable and two cable joints belonging to Transnet. The incident occurred in August 2024, with the total value of the stolen items amounting to R3108-83. Furthermore, it was established that the accused was found to be illegally in the country. On 11 April 2025, the 46-year-old accused, Neo Ramatheko, appeared in court and pleaded guilty to the charges of theft from infrastructure and being illegal in the country. The Trompsburg Regional court delivered the sentence as follows: for theft from infrastructure he was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment. Being illegally in the country he was ordered to pay R6000 fine or 3 months imprisonment. The sentence for being illegal in the country will run concurrently with the 8 years’ imprisonment for theft. The SAPS in the Free State commends the diligent work of Constable Tshangana, the National Prosecuting Authority represented by Advocate Leon Ehlers, and all other role players involved in ensuring a successful prosecution in this case.
