Anele Kula made a brief appearance at the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing a murder charge after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend, Sinenhlanhla Mathonsi, to death while she was working at a supermarket in Soweto.
The incident took place on Sunday evening at Protea Glen Mall, where 22-year-old Mathonsi was on duty. Kula, 26, who also worked in the same mall, is accused of entering the store and attacking her with a knife, inflicting multiple wounds to her upper body.
Authorities responded quickly and arrested Kula at the scene.
Prosecutors told the court that the killing was premeditated, although they confirmed that Kula had no previous criminal record.
