Media Statement POLOKWANE – On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, the Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo SAPS, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, and Mogalakwena Municipality Mayor, Councillor Ngoako Tauatsoala, along with various stakeholders, attended the handover of a VEP structure donated by Anglo American Mine to the Mahwelereng police station. This event coincided with a Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) awareness campaign at Delcramer Blessman Ministry stadium in Sekgakgapeng village, where men were encouraged to speak out about their issues and contribute to combating gender-based violence. At Mahwelereng police station, the ceremony included the presentation of state-of-the-art mobile homes by Anglo-American Platinum mine. Mr. George Mamabolo, a representative from Anglo American Mine, highlighted that in 2020/2021, the mine ran various programs to support communities in the province, with the VEP centre being one of them, aiming to provide support to victims and ensure their safety. The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo SAPS, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, warmly welcomed the new structure and expressed heartfelt appreciation for the donation, emphasizing its importance in supporting and restoring the dignity of GBVF survivors. She stressed the need to address the alarming incidents of violence against women and children in the province, acknowledging the historically low chances of finding missing persons alive, particularly in such cases. However, she noted a significant decrease in such incidents within the Mahwelereng policing area. “We are honestly strengthened to see that we are not fighting criminal activities alone, especially because it happens in private spaces and it really requires every practical strategy to win,” she added, emphasizing the importance of taking care of the shelter. In Del Cremar, Sekgakgapeng village, various stakeholders, including psychologist Mrs. Langa, GBVF Ambassador Mr. Ngobeni, and Dr. Senoamadi, took to the stage and addressed the psychological, physical, and spiritual health of men. While the Ambassador highlighted challenges that men can face in their lives. Community members were given the opportunity to ask questions, and different stakeholders provided clarity. The Waterberg District Commissioner, Major General Mangena, on behalf of the Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General MT Hadebe, highlighted the wisdom of knowing that men are also victims of GBVF and like any other person have the right to be assistance. She also urged men to participate in endeavours that are aimed at addressing Gender based violence as men have the power to change the circumstances and the behaviour of other men. While the Mayor of Mogalakwena Local Municipality, Mr. Tauatsoala in his keynote address, urged all enforcement agencies to act swiftly to help GBVF victims and support men who are victims of GBVF.
