Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The De Aar Regional Court sentenced Jean-Pierre Bruyns (39) to 10 years’ imprisonment for motor vehicle theft and theft. On Wednesday, 18 September 2023, the accused stole a Toyota Hilux bakkie and farm equipment worth R230 000-00 from the farm where he was employed in Loxton. He also stole his employer’s petrol card and purchased R3000-00 petrol for the stolen bakkie. The accused then travelled to Beaufort West, where he stole a trailer and two motorcycles. The members of De Aar Vehicle Crime Investigations Unit (VCIU) traced and arrested the accused on 23 December 2023 in Kempton Park, Johannesburg. The police did not retrieve any of the stolen goods. Bruyns was found guilty and sentenced in the De Aar Regional Court as follows: Count 1: Theft of motor vehicle: 5 years’ imprisonment. Count 2: Theft general: 5 years’ imprisonment. The court also declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm. The SAPS lauds Detective Sergeant Samuel Witbooi of De Aar VCIU for his hard work and commitment that secured a conviction. Ends
