Media Statement KIMBERLEY – A 12 year prison sentence was handed down by the Carnavon Regional Court to 24-year-old Kerneels Maerman following the housebreaking and attempted rape of a 47-year-old female victim at a farm in Loxton on Sunday, 16 July 2023. The Court heard that the accused kicked open the victim’s home, repeatedly assaulted and attempted to rape the victim. The victim’s son who was hiding under the bed managed to flee and seek assistance from the farmer who reported the matter to the police. The accused was subsequently arrested. The accused was found guilty by the Court on Friday, 31 May 2024 on housebreaking with the intent to rape and attempted rape. He was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for the offence and was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. Detective Warrant Officer Floris Fritz from the Carnavon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit led the investigation and State Presecutor Mr Thakiso Thebane secured the conviction and ensured justice for the victim of GBVF. The police are encouraging the public to rate the police efforts in fighting crime by participating in the “RATE OUR SERVICE” online survey to assist the police in improving services. Ends
