Local Government Election Candidate Arrested in KZN for Unlicensed Firearm and Ammunition
A 49-year-old local government election councillor candidate is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court today following his arrest for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mariannhill operationalised a tip-off regarding a man carrying a weapon in Dassenhoek on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. The subsequent intelligence-driven investigation led officers to a local residence in the Ekukhanyeni area.
According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a search of the premises uncovered the firearm and ammunition. The suspect was placed under immediate arrest after failing to produce any legal documentation or permits authorizing him to possess the weapon.
Preliminary police investigations revealed a political twist to the arrest, confirming that the 49-year-old suspect is a registered councillor candidate for an unnamed political party contesting the upcoming Local Government Elections.
The suspect’s identity is being withheld pending his first formal court appearance. SAPS has reiterated its commitment to removing illegal guns from communities as part of its ongoing
