Media Statement POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, urges parents and guardians to monitor learners from getting involved in “Pens Down” activities following the end of examination period. This clarion call is to ensure their safety. While the end of examination period is characterised by excitement, it poses significant safety risks such as exposure to drugs and harmful substances, irresponsible drinking behaviour, rape and sexual assault amongst others as well as embedded culture of violence. “We have observed posters being circulated on social media platforms of “Pens Down” parties being organised in the province, whereby children are urged to pay R30.00 in various tarvens to celebrate the end of examination period. It is illegal for children to go to these places. Those responsible for organising such events will be apprehended as these irresponsible actions are punishable by law,” said Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe. “We urge parents and guardians to know the whereabouts and movements of children under their care. This will in turn ensure their safety. Lastly, those learners that are willing to celebrate can do so responsibly at their respective homes under the supervision of parents and guardians,” added Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.
Meanwhile, the police through the members of pro-active policing will be out in numbers patrolling entertainment areas such as tarvens and parks to ensure that “Pens Down” parties do not take place.
