POLOKWANE – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, led by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Support Services, Major General Christine Morakaladi,who stood in for the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe held a glittering farewell ceremony to honour Lieutenant Colonel Nyabane Maggie Munyuku who is on the verge of going on retirement. The event took place in Polokwane, marking the end of an era after more than 38 years’ of dedicated service. Lieutenant Colonel Munyuku, who served as the Sub-section Commander in the Limpopo Provincial Placement and Records, is celebrated for her exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to her work. Her journey has left a profound legacy within SAPS and the communities she diligently served. Among the attendees were Brigadier Balebokile Lizzy Sigage, Provincial Head of Human Resource & Development; Section Commanders of Provincial Human Resource Management & Development, including Colonel Chueu, Colonel Mukwevho, Colonel Mabusela and Colonel Sambo, along with colleagues and subordinates from across the province. Lieutenant Colonel Munyuku, began her Police journey on the 07th July 1986 at the former Lebowa in Hammanskraal Police Academy. Her career path reflects the following:
1996: Promoted to Sergeant, stationed at Lebowakgomo SAPS. She was awarded medals commemorating 10, 20, and 30 years of faithful service, a testament to her long-standing commitment. She holds a National Diploma in Human Resource Management and short courses offered by SAPS. Beyond her professional responsibilities, she’s a mother to a lovely daughter and a grandmother to a grandchild. In her address, Major General Morakaladi praised Lieutenant Colonel Munyuku’s enduring legacy, saying, “What counts in life is the difference you make to others. Her journey through stations like Motetema, Lebowakgomo, and Lephalale has been one of integrity and impact. Her leadership style, rooted in humility and dedication, has uplifted others and left a lasting impression.” She also quoted Nelson Mandela: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead. ”Major General reflected on Munyuku’s influence, describing her as a guiding force within the organisation, whose compassion and hard work helped shape SAPS operations and inspired future leaders. As you turn the page to this new chapter, embrace the adventures that await. Retirement is not an end but the beginning of a new journey.” Colonel Mukwevho, speaking as an immediate commander, praised the outgoing Lieutenant Colonel Munyuku as a very extra- ordinary individual. She has been a pillar of the organisation, particularly the area she led. “One of the things that stands out about her is her incredible work ethic and continuous level of contributions, regardless of the project or role that I assigned to her. Her experience and skills have been invaluable in my office. Willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty has established a high bar for us to strive for. She’s so responsible that she despises being questioned for failing to complete her assignments” Brigadier Sigage’s heartfelt words: “Lieutenant Colonel Munyuku has worked with pride and remained loyal to the SAPS until the end. Her conduct, professionalism, and mentorship will continue to influence the younger generation. We also thank her family for the support and for sharing her with the organization all these years.” In her farewell message, Lieutenant Colonel Munyuku encouraged her colleagues to remain resilient and committed: “Do not be afraid to face challenges. Within this institution, always be inquisitive. Communication is key. Be disciplined, and respect everyone, regardless of rank.” As colleagues and subordinates shared messages of well wishes, it was clear that Lieutenant Colonel Munyuku’s legacy will endure, one marked by service, honor, and inspiration.
