Limpopo records seven clean audits as AG praises province’s progress
POLOKWANE: Limpopo has recorded an improvement in its provincial audit outcomes, with seven provincial entities receiving clean audits in the 2025/26 financial year.
The provincial government welcomed the Auditor-General’s 2025/26 PFMA Audit Report, which recorded seven clean audits, nine unqualified audit opinions with findings and three qualified audit opinions with findings.
Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba said the increase in clean audits from six to seven was an indication of progress in strengthening accountability and financial management across the provincial administration.
“We welcome the Auditor-General’s report, which places the province in a better position for improvement. We are particularly encouraged by the increase in clean audits from six to seven. This progress reflects a province on the move, but we know there is more work to do,” said Ramathuba.
Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke and her team commended the province for the progress made, noting that this was the first time Limpopo had reached these audit-outcome levels.
Maluleke also acknowledged the support provided by the Premier, MEC for Finance and MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs to provincial departments, including efforts to improve performance plans.
“It is going to be imperative that the gains made are never lost. Irregular expenditure gains and maintaining discipline in preventing unauthorised expenditure must not be reversed. These are set of outcomes that are showing that this is a province on the move,” said Maluleke.
The Auditor-General further highlighted increased attention by audit committees and internal audit functions, while stressing the importance of oversight bodies in maintaining the province’s improved audit performance.
Maluleke cautioned the provincial government to protect the gains achieved, particularly in relation to the management and prevention of irregular expenditure.
The provincial government said it would continue working to strengthen financial management and accountability, while addressing challenges affecting entities such as the Roads Agency Limpopo and the Limpopo Economic Development Agency.
Ramathuba said the audit results should ultimately be reflected in improved service delivery to communities.
“The audit results are an important measure of progress, but they must translate into better services for our people. We will protect the improvements achieved, address areas of regression and strengthen accountability across government,” said Ramathuba.
