POLOKWANE – The dedicated members of the Provincial Vispol Task Team have conducted a series of successful operations resulting in the arrest of nine suspects, aged between 30 and 45, for various offenses during the Easter period from Thursday, 28 March to Saturday, 30 March 2024. One of the arrests on Thursday, 28 March 2024, involved the apprehension of a 34-year-old male suspect for Assault GBH in the Botlokwa policing area. During another operation, the Task Team received information about a 40-year-old male suspected of possessing an unlicensed hunting firearm in Seloroto, Makgaung village under the Maake policing area. The suspect was swiftly arrested at the scene with the unlicensed firearm and ammunition in his possession. Furthermore, two suspects, aged 30 and 42, were apprehended during the operation, which was carried out in collaboration with the Vhembe District Task Team, Thohoyandou Public Order Policing (POPS), Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Task Team. These individuals were arrested following a robbery and assault on a police officer at Ha-Mangilasi village in the Vuwani policing area. They were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Another significant arrest occurred on Thursday, 28 March 2024, around 22:00, after the police received information about suspected rhino poachers who were reportedly traveling in a silver Toyota Corolla along the R529 road towards the Nkambako area. Working together with the Letsitele Farm Watch, the police successfully located and identified the motor vehicle with four suspects on board. Upon searching the suspects, they were found to be in possession of a rifle cocking grip. The four suspects, aged between 34 and 45, were promptly arrested on the scene for conspiracy to commit a crime (rhino poaching), possession of a firearm part, and illegal immigration. Furthermore, on Friday, 29 March 2024, at about 09:30, police spotted a suspicious white Isuzu Truck while patrolling along the N1 North public road under the Makhado precinct. The truck was stopped, searched, and found fully loaded with eighty-nine (89) boxes of Remington Gold illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R534 000. A 45-year-old Tanzanian foreign male national was immediately arrested on the spot for possession of illicit cigarettes. The truck used in the commission of the crime was also impounded. Additionally, a 44-year-old woman was issued a R500.00 fine for Contravention of the Liquor Act after she was found selling liquor without a license at Hamangilasi village under the Vuwani policing area.
