POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has on Tuesday, 05 November 2024, supported the District Commissioner of Mopani District, Major General Willy Mashava during the official launch of multi-disciplinary Safer Festive Season operations at Tzaneen Crossing Mall. This follows the Premier of Limpopo, Dr. Phophi Ramathuba launching the multi-disciplinary safer festive season operations on 27 October 2024 at Lebowakgomo policing area. The attendees included the Acting Executive Mayor of Mopani District, MMC Councilor Shivambu, Local Councilors, Mopani Deputy District District Commissioner, Brigadier Mary Mashila, Station Commanders, Visible Policing Commanders, Detective Commanders, Members of Provincial Office including Band, Community Policing structures, Other Departments, Stakeholders and Community members. The District Commissioner of Mopani, Major General Willy Mashava, as he outlined the overview of the Safer Festive Season Operations, said that in Mopani district, they are committed to preventing and combatting crime. Protecting the citizens, visitors and business community in the district. He highlighted the need to maintain law and order, thus restoring trust and strengthening partnership with communities. “Our aim is clear, we are interested in the safety of everyone who come into contact with Mopani district,” added General Willy Mashava. Meanwhile, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, urged the police officers not to lose their morals and stressed the need to lift high the image of the SAPS without belittling the communities they serve. “Fight those criminal elements and still respect and treat people with dignity. Some of the things I cannot teach you now. As an officer, you know your tools of trade. Do not think twice when you have to defend yourself, protect your community and the properties of this province,” said Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe. She also appreciated the presence of other stakeholders, including the liquor board. She said alcohol is a contributing factor to various criminal activities experienced in the province. Communities were boldly given a task of protecting each other by not taking the law into their own hands but by providing positive information to the police. “We all know that you know these criminals who are operating in your respective communities. I encourage you to provide the police with this vital information in order to apprehend these criminals. Fighting crime is a collective responsibility,” added Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe. She then declared the multi-disciplinary safer festive season operations officially launched at Tzaneen, Mopani district. The Acting Executive Mayor of Mopani District, MMC Councilor Shivambu, in her address, reiterated that the community and law enforcement officers should work together to fight against crime in their respective areas. She warned motorists from drinking and driving as the law enforcement agencies will arrest all road users conducting themselves with impunity. She also called upon the communities of Tzaneen and surrounding areas not to engage themselves in hitchhiking, as many have been raped, robbed and killed in the process. Ends
