POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has strongly condemned the ongoing incidents of vigilantism, following the brutal murder of an alleged suspect on Monday, 02 September 2024 at approximately 04:00 in Ribacross, Tubatse, Sekhukhune District. According to reports, a group of community members attacked a 27-year-old man accused of attempting to break into a local tavern. It is further suggested that the tarven owner was alerted to unknown suspects trying to break in, and upon arrival, one of the suspects fired a shot in his direction. A section of unknown community members rushed to the scene, chased the suspect, and cornered him. The enraged crowd then dragged the alleged suspect to a dumping site where they stoned him to death. Police recovered a firearm and two cellphones allegedly belonging to the deceased. The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Hadebe reiterated, “This kind of action is a setback for us, as we continuously warn the community against taking the law into their own hands. We urge our community to follow the right channels when dealing with suspected criminals instead of solving crime themselves.” Police have opened a case of murder, and a manhunt for the suspects in both incidents is underway. Anyone with information should contact Lieutenant Colonel David Twala on 071 210 6628, Crime Stop at 08600 10111, their nearest Police Station, or use the MySAPSApp. Ends
