Media Statement POLOKWANE – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo has made significant strides in ensuring a safer festive season through the weekly high-density Operation Shanela, which has resulted in the arrest of 553 suspects. Conducted between 21 October and 27 October 2024, the operation led to the apprehension of suspects for various offences, including murder, armed robbery, rape, malicious damage to property, burglary, theft of motor vehicles, drug-related crimes, assault and corruption. Key outcomes of the operation included the confiscation of a substantial quantity of various drugs, a rifle, 42 illegal rounds of ammunition, counterfeit goods and illicit cigarettes. These successes were achieved through enhanced patrols and community engagement initiatives implemented across the province, which effectively deterred criminal activities. In addition, specialized units have focused on specific crime trends, resulting in the recovery of stolen property and illegal firearm and ammunition. “We are dedicated to maintaining this momentum and ensuring the safety of our communities as we approach the festive season. We extend our gratitude to the public and our partners in the fight against crime for their support and cooperation,” said Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe. Ends
