Media Statement POLOKWANE – The South African Police Service in Limpopo has made significant progress in its ongoing Operation, “Shanela,” (Kukula) aimed at curbing criminal activities across the province. In the recent weekly operation conducted between 08 April and 14 April 2024, a total of 423 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from burglary, malicious damage to property, theft of motor vehicle, possession and dealing in illicit cigarettes and drugs, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, illegal possession of explosives and counterfeit goods, contravention of the Immigration Act and Wildlife Act and illicit mining amongst others. During the operation, the police confiscated four illegal firearms as well as ammunition, 868 counterfeit goods, various drugs such as dagga, nyaope and crystal meth, large quantities of alcohol as well as a substantial amount of cash. In addition to the confiscation, the officers arrested 141 undocumented persons at various locations. The operation, which is part of SAPS’s continuous efforts to ensure public safety and to combat crime, has seen co-ordinated efforts from multiple units within the police service and external role players. Through intelligence-led operations and strategic deployments, men and women in blue have been able to target key areas known for serious and violent crimes. The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has expressed her gratitude to the dedicated officers involved in the operation for their commitment and dedication in fighting crime, more especially as the country gears for the upcoming national and provincial elections. Some of the suspects have already appeared at various Magistrate’s Courts across the province. Ends
