A wave of grief has swept across Limpopo after two devastating road crashes claimed the lives of 14 people within hours in the Sekhukhune District, leaving families shattered and communities searching for answers.

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Susani Violet Mathye, has expressed profound sadness following the tragic incidents, describing the loss of life as a heartbreaking moment for the province.

The first crash occurred on the R555 between Stoffberg and Rossenkraal in the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality.

According to preliminary information, the collision involved a Volkswagen Polo, a kombi and a truck. Five people died at the scene after the vehicles collided under circumstances that remain under investigation. Authorities have not ruled out reckless driving as a possible contributing factor.

Only a short time later, another fatal crash unfolded on Road D4370, between Phokwane and Mamphogo, in the Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality.

The collision involved a Volkswagen Polo and a Toyota Tazz. Preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed may have played a role in the crash.

Nine people lost their lives in the second accident. Four occupants of the Volkswagen Polo and five occupants of the Toyota Tazz were declared dead at the scene.

Across both crashes, six people sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Speaking after the incidents, MEC Mathye conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.

“The dark cloud is hanging over Sekhukhune District and, on behalf of the Department and the people of Limpopo, I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. I also wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said Mathye.

The Department of Transport and Community Safety has once again appealed to motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads. Drivers have been urged to obey traffic laws, avoid reckless driving and take regular breaks during long journeys, with the department recommending a rest stop after every two hours of driving.

Traffic law enforcement officers will also be deployed to monitor accident-prone routes and increase visibility at identified hotspots in an effort to reduce further tragedies.

The department confirmed that engagements with the Sekhukhune District Municipality and the affected local municipalities will continue, after which the public will be updated on any new developments.

As investigations into both crashes continue, the province is left mourning one of its deadliest days on the roads, with authorities hoping the tragedy serves as another urgent reminder of the importance of responsible driving.
