MTHATHA – Mthatha Regional Court has sentenced a 36-year-old Congo National, Coki Chicha Juslain, to a life sentence after he raped a female victim in 2020. The Congolese man offered a lift to a hitch-hiking lady on 27 October 2020 from Mqanduli towards Mthatha, and he promised the hitchhiker of a job in his shop in Vidgesville. They both agreed to meet the following day. On 28 October 2020, the victim went to his shop and on her arrival she was locked in a room with burglar bars. He raped and threatened her with a knife. The victim was released after being raped and went to Mthatha Central Police Station and opened a case of rape. He was then arrested on 27 November 2020 and charged for rape and his first appearance at Mthatha Magistrate Court was on30 November 2020. The bail was opposed successfully and he was remanded in custody. He appeared several times at the Magistrate Court, and his case was transferred to Regional Court on 09 April 2021. Coki Chicha Juslain was sentenced to life imprisonment by Mthatha Regional court on 27 August 2024. The OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Phumzile Cetyana has welcomed the sentence and congratulated the investigating officer, Sgt Mhlabukutshiwe for securing a conviction and in ensuring that the rapist is removed from the society. “This sends a strong message and a lesson to sexual abusers that these acts of abusing vulnerable will never be tolerated,” he concluded Ends
