EASTERN CAPE – The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene launched the Province’s Safer Festive Season Operations at the Tobi Kula Sports Centre in Komani today, 1 November 2024. The event was characterized by what is commonly known as the show of force, as the province showcased the level of resources and manpower that will be in action during the festive season period. The SAPS will also be assisted by several stakeholders ranging from traffic officers to private security personnel. This year’s Safer Festive Season Operations are being held under the theme of “Combating Crime through Decisive Police Action and Robust Community Involvement” The audience who graced the event listened to various pertinent stakeholders, who committed to partner and support the South African Police Service as force multipliers. A salient message from most stakeholders was a commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach in combating crime for this period. The Provincial CPF Board Chairperson, Mr Buys in delivering his message of support, he promised the stakeholders that the CPF members will be visible on the ground, and also engage tavern owners to indirectly assist in these efforts of combating crime during this period, by adhering to the liquor regulations and their respective trading hours. The keynote address was delivered by the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene. She urged the stakeholders and the community members to work together with the police in combating crime. During her address, she highlighted that from the first week of December, the operations will be complemented with 238 new Constables, who will be passing out soon from several police academies, in addition to 359, who passed out in October this year. The operational plan for Safer Festive Season was delivered by a drone and was handed over to the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso. She then handed it over to the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, symbolizing that an operational plan is in place to combat crime during the festive period and beyond. The Supply Chain Management handed over 50 vehicles to the Provincial Commissioner. She then allocated the fleet to the eight (08) districts within the province, to assist in enhancing police visibility. She further assured the audience that there is going to be heightened level of operations in all the eight districts. “The Festive Season Operations is an extension of Operation Shanela, which is a national operation and these will therefore be conducted parallel to Operation Shanela. We have seen the fruits in Operation Shanela, and we are confident that when communities and their leaders work in conjunction with the SAPS and that each and every one of us commits to the common goal of reducing the threat of crime, together we can minimize the prospect of criminals taking advantage of what should be a season of joy and festivity”, concluded Lt Gen Mene Ends
