POLOKWANE – Police in Lephalale have made breakthrough in the investigation into cases of tampering with essential infrastructure (illegal removal of copper cables) following the arrest of two male suspects in separate incidents. The 39-year-old suspect, Johannes Semat, was caught red-handed digging copper cables in Onverwacht on the outskirts of Lephalale town on 04 April 2024. This after Police acted on a positive tip-off, jointly with the local private security. Upon arrival at the scene, the other three suspects managed to escape and the suspect was found in possession of a 10 metre copper cable worth about R3000-00.The suspect was granted R1000, 00 bail following his second appearance in Lephalale Magistrate’s Court yesterday. His case was postponed to 03 June 2024. Meanwhile, police arrested a Zimbabwean national male suspect, Aaron Chevda Muranganwa, 26, after he was found busy cutting copper cables on a farm outside Lephalale town on 11 April 2024. He made his second appearance at the local Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where his case was postponed to 02 May 2024 for further bail application and police investigations.The suspect was further linked to a similar case that took place in town. The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has welcomed the arrest of the suspects.” The theft and tampering of infrastructure not only disrupt essential services but also pose serious safety risks to the public,” added Lieutenant General Hadebe.
Police investigations are still continuing.
