Media Statement GARDEN ROUTE DISTRICT – The fight against serious and violent crime received a major boost with lengthy incarcerations imposed on three men convicted on murder charges at the Regional courts sitting at Knysna and Oudtshoorn during the past week. On Thursday, 27 June 2024 the Regional court at Knysna sentenced Siyanda Skali (27) to 12 years’ and Gavin Jantjies (35) to 15 years’ direct imprisonment on a charge of murder each. The accused were convicted following their arrest in connection with the death of Lungisile Majola (37) on 16 January 2022. Investigation revealed that the two men assaulted the victim outside the Bafana Bafana shop at Concordia, Knysna. He sustained stab wounds to the head and chest inflicted with a knife. The victim was later declared dead by medical personnel. The police arrested the pair soon thereafter each on a murder charge. They have been in custody ever since. In an unrelated matter, Oudtshoorn Regional court, on Wednesday, 26 June 2024 sentenced Jonathan Rhodes (40) to 15 years’ imprisonment following his conviction on a murder charge. The investigation into the death of Andre Rhodes (32) revealed, the two brothers were at their residence at Steenbok Road, Bridgton in Oudtshoorn on 06 March 2022 when they had an altercation. The accused stabbed his brother with a knife and the victim sustained a stab wound to the stomach. He collapsed on the scene where paramedics later declared the victim dead. The accused was subsequently arrested and sentenced upon conclusion of a lengthy trial. Western Cape management commended the investigation officers and prosecuting teams involved in both matters for their diligence as well as commitment in ensuring long term sentences in these cases. These lengthy incarcerations should also send a stern warning to those threatening the safety of society. Ends
